NFP: January report might show moderately positive data

Recent improvement in US economic data as well as the positive numbers shown in the November and December Nonfarm Payrolls reports do not necessarily mean that the condition of the labor market is on a road of steady growth.

NFP Forecast

The analysts polled for our special forecast report emphasize that the increases registered in the last two months were mostly due to one-off, seasonal factors and according to Bill Hubard "while the labour market is improving, the pace of recovery is still disappointing." Yohay Elam indicates "the expiration of tax incentives at the end of 2011" as one of the reasons why January figures might not be as high as those from the last two months.

On the other hand Adam Narczewski does not consider possible "a sudden deterioration of the labor market" and even points to a slight decrease of the unemployment rate to 8.4%. Other analysts rather see it remaining at 8.5% and, such as in the case of Talal Abdullah, "believe that the Non-farm Payrolls will show 'moderate' jobs growth."

Generally, the predictions of experts vary considerably: from 100.000 jobs added as Ilian Yotov suggests, to a very optimistic 250-260.000 estimate from Alberto Muñoz. The majority however indicates a number hovering around 200.000.
